Book publishing

Books have been around for centuries, and haven’t changed too much: they’re still words and/or images on bound sheets of paper. But how those words are published, well, that’s another story.

A few decades ago, one had two book publishing options, the first being the traditional arrangement with publishers. You could publish a book yourself, but that involved printing thousands of copies, then trying to distribute them despite the stigma of self-publishing being dismissed as “vanity press.”

But now it’s now. Unless you can convince one of the publishers who has yet to go bankrupt that your book will sell a million copies, you’re not going to get a contract.

On the other hand, one can publish a new title and have it distributed through major online retailers such as Amazon for hundreds—not thousands—of dollars. In addition, this arrangements provides for complete editorial control as well as a much greater percentage of the retail price than almost any publisher will offer.

And then there are ebooks, from PDF to Kindle to who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I enjoy helping people get their work published; perhaps we should talk?
